Though very poorly edited and full of errata, this volume is rich in insights based on Ristoff's study of Updike manuscripts at Harvard's Houghton Library. It uses Kenneth Burke's "scenic" approach to make an argument that "For Rabbit, the scene America is the most important event of his life" (p. xv). Rabbit embodies "the values of the nation" (p. 63). According to Ristoff Christian critics have overemphasized the religious moralism in Updike's Rabbit series.
